Accelerated Theta Burst Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Depression

Subject area of study:
Mental Health - Depression
Title of study:
Accelerated Theta Burst Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Depression
Brief outline of the study:

The study is an investigator-initiated, randomised controlled trial comparing Theta Burst Stimulation (TBS) to standard, once daily repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS). The aim is to evaluate its relative effectiveness and rapidity of clinical effect as a treatment for depression. rTMS is an effective treatment, but one which takes a long time to induce clinical response. This limits its applicability in clinical practice and is associated with considerable treatment costs. TBS is a type of TMS where the magnetic pulses are applied in very short bursts (three pulses at a time) at a high frequency (30-50 pulses a second) and appears to produce similar effects to standard rTMS but with markedly less time demands.
