A randomised placebo controlled trial of estradiol vs progesterone for the treatment of women with borderline personality disorder
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a serious and highly prevalent psychiatric disorder, affecting women more than men. Childhood trauma is reported in most patients and is linked to abnormalities in the development of neuroendocrine axes, indicating the neuroendocrine system as a potential therapeutic target for BPD symptoms. Thus, this study proposes to conduct a randomised double-blind placebo controlled trial of comparing hormones estradiol and progesterone as an adjunct treatment for women BPD.
Participants aged 18-43 who have a diagnosis of BPD or experience symptoms of BPD are invited to join this study. It consists of 4 face-to-face appointments, & several phone appointments over 12 weeks. Participants will be provided with study medication free of charge, & closely monitored throughout the trial. At the conclusion of the trial, all participants will meet with Prof Jayashri Kulkarni to discuss trial results & treatment options.
